Hi, I inherited a [small-medium sized] lab with several (a dozen or so) old SunFire 440s and a couple Sun Netra 440s. Additional air-conditioning was added at a later date (no precautions, never mind "proper", had been taken against dust & etc). Of the 440s, several power-supplies were packed tight with dust and their fans failed (if not the entire power supply), several system fans also failed in time seemingly simply due to the age. The Sun Fire 440 servers ran for several weeks at a time before repairs (various reasons) and survived... But the Netra 440s were added at a later date and haven't gone through the same torture - so no practical information there to share. In any case, it's an interesting finding; do you have a source (might help me with managers in the future to get repairs done faster :) )? I saw a notice today that indicates that the thing will eventually overheat if only one fan dies. The notice did not mention any specifics about the ambient temp or airflow conditions.
If this were a common occurrence, you'd think that it would have gotten more press by now.
