Certainly, one can seem why the aesthetics seem grim. On the other hand, it's important to remember that hotels view phones strictly as a cost centre and a begrudgingly necessary regulatory obligation, except to the extent that they help drive revenue for things like room service. Otherwise, guests don't use them, and nobody seriously makes calls on their in-room phone.
