PRI Gateway Supporting 1 - 3 PRI's

Hey VoiceOps, I was looking for some recommendations for a SIP-PRI Gateway that supports at least 1 PRI connecting back to the clients PBX. I've seen Adtrans are popular, but we don't have any experience with them yet. Thanks, Keith

The Adtran 908e is good for that. What kind of transport network are you using? There's some AudioCodes gear that works well, is pretty cost-effective, but they're mostly Ethernet WAN so you may have to bring in additional CPE depending on what your transport network looks like. +1 with the Adtran 900 series and there support is top notch and well documented on the net. I agree with the Adtran TA900 series. We use them solely for our PRIs and for any large number of analog lines at customer sites (TA900s not TA900es). They are easy to trunk and separate out the management on a private VLAN and they work well with TACACS (not as well with RADIUS). There is a lot of documentation (sometimes too much when you get up to things like the TA5000s). They also have an entire web suite to manage a lot of the equipment, we are just starting to play with this and haven't done anything in it with the TA900s. We use Adtran TA and Netventa products in many SIP to PSTN applications and they seem to perform well. Most US and EU ISDN protocol variants are supported. However, if you plan on using it in other countries, you might want to consult with Adtran. Adtran TA900 series. TA90x (x = number of fxs ports 4, 8, 12, 16, 24) supports one PRI and one fast ethernet connection. TA90xe (x = number of fxs ports 8, 12, 16, 24) supports two PRI and two fast ethernet connections. Latest version of these - Gen. 3 also has one Gigabit ethernet port. Rock-solid, well supported, easy to configure. -- Jay Hennigan - CCIE #7880 - Network Engineering - jay at impulse.net Impulse Internet Service - http://www.impulse.net/ Your local telephone and internet company - 805 884-6323 - WB6RDV

I'm assuming that the Adtran TA900 has a high precision clock. Do they come in 4x PRI configurations? *Max Clark* Managing Director | Phyber Communications +1 (213) 929 1700 | mclark at phyber.com Visit us at www.phyber.com Hosting | Network | Voice On Mon, Dec 9, 2013 at 3:49 PM, Jay Hennigan <jay at west.net> wrote:

It has an internal oscillator for T1 clock, but not of BITS type accuracy. You'll get slips if you have a BITS-timed T1 connected with the Adtran set to internal clock. Of course you can set it to synchronize from line. We've never had any problems driving a stand-alone PBX from its internal clock. I haven't evaluated the precision of its time-of-day clock. It supports NTP so this hasn't been an issue. Maximum number of PRIs supported is two on the -e models, even though they have four T1 interfaces, only two of them support TDM voice. The other two (or all four if you want) can be used for data as PPP, HDLC, or frame-relay. -- Jay Hennigan - CCIE #7880 - Network Engineering - jay at impulse.net Impulse Internet Service - http://www.impulse.net/ Your local telephone and internet company - 805 884-6323 - WB6RDV

So for installations requiring more than 2x T1s what's the recommendation? *Max Clark* Managing Director | Phyber Communications +1 (213) 929 1700 | mclark at phyber.com Visit us at www.phyber.com Hosting | Network | Voice On Mon, Dec 9, 2013 at 8:12 PM, Jay Hennigan <jay at west.net> wrote:

This may fall under the stupid question category.. But where do you find reasonably priced transport for your PRI's? We're a hosted Voip vendor so we typically have just ran over whatever ISP's bandwidth we could find. However more and more we're asked to supply a PRI or SIP trunk to a customers location. I see other large providers in our area providing this service, and I assume that they must be getting a wholesale price from the ILEC (In our case ATT) on the transport.. But I've never made any headway with them. How are these other companies providing PRI + bandwidth for $300-$450 per month? Is there a way to secure cheaper transport? Thanks David -- Ringfree Communications David Wessell 828-575-0030 x101

A lot of them have an aggregated transport facility (e.g. a DS3) from the ILEC that they pay as a fairly large fixed cost, so T1s to customer locations are "tail circuits" (distinct T1s on one end, and cross-connected and muxed onto your T3 on the other) with a lower incremental cost. Actual cost depends on mileage factors and any interoffice mileage, but can be as low as $100-$150. If a lot of your competitors are CLECs, the answer is more obvious. Yep, though the ILEC will rape you on EELs dragged in from another wire centre that you're not in. At least when you buy wholesale ILEC transport, you take the pain up front, instead of eating the expense of going into a blacklisted CO where you don't get real UNE pricing and getting eaten alive on EELs. -- Alex Balashov - Principal Evariste Systems LLC 235 E Ponce de Leon Ave Suite 106 Decatur, GA 30030 United States Tel: +1-678-954-0670 Web: http://www.evaristesys.com/, http://www.alexbalashov.com/

It's hard for me to say. I don't get the impression folks are becoming CLECs anew much anymore for the purpose of ILEC interconnection and UNE resale, but CLEC status that affords other rights-of-way (e.g. WiMax, fiber providers) seems as popular as ever. For ITSPs, I think finding good existing CLEC partners is a more practical strategy than becoming a CLEC themselves, unless their market focus is really, really small and highly specialised in a particular area, and they have the large multi-site customers necessary to make it work. -- Alex [1] Notwithstanding the recent FCC ruling about how VoIP providers can own numbers directly--it remains to be seen how that will actually be implemented, and whether the regulatory burden will be similar to that of CLEC in practice. -- Alex Balashov - Principal Evariste Systems LLC 235 E Ponce de Leon Ave Suite 106 Decatur, GA 30030 United States Tel: +1-678-954-0670 Web: http://www.evaristesys.com/, http://www.alexbalashov.com/

Max, You could look at Adtran Netvantas. We are starting to deploy these and many have add in cards (8x T1s per card). **We have not used them to turn up PRIs yet, still using the TA900 series. We are in the process of vetting and deploying the Netvantas (8044Ms in particular) for internet and will be turning voice up on them after.** We are home running the T1s (Pseudowire) back to an OptiPlex (6100 MX) and that is using physical OC/DS (3 or 12) back to our phone switch (the physical connection was not configured by me so I am not up to speed on it yet).
