Has anyone used Solarwinds SNMP monitoring software for Broadsoft and ACME packet to receive Traps for these devices? Can solarwinds not load the MIB files directly and compile them or do we have to use a MIB walker to create a Trap/MIB-CSV file that we then provide to solarwinds who will include it in their MIB Database and provide an updated database to us for the Solarwinds system? Any help would be appreciated?

Solarwinds in general is horrid and abysmal for third-party MIB importation. My conclusion was: give up and use something else. However, that was 2-3 years ago; maybe they have gotten their shit together on that since ver. 7. -- Alex Balashov - Principal Evariste Systems LLC 1170 Peachtree Street 12th Floor, Suite 1200 Atlanta, GA 30309 Tel: +1-678-954-0670 Fax: +1-404-961-1892 Web: http://www.evaristesys.com/ On Nov 22, 2010, at 1:42 PM, Ujjval Karihaloo <ujjval at simplesignal.com> wrote:

Also more generally, MIBs define a data structure (ie what information is available to you) not a monitoring schema. For the most part, you can never just load a MIB and expect to get a bunch of nice labeled magic graphs that show all the information you care about in a meaningful color-coded manner. Sometimes the only benefit of loading a MIB is translating traps, whereas for anything you want to poll, you can just enter the OID. A number of the higher end commercial NMS products have "modules" or "plug-ins" for different Vendors that do that, but that includes their polling and graph definitions as well as the actual MIB. I am/have been monitoring both BroadSoft (BroadWorks AS/NS/MS) and AcmePacket units via SNMP in ZenOSS via SNMP for some time. I'd presume there is some way to do the same in Solarwinds, but as Alex said it really doesn't give an easy way to watch a custom OID from what I have seen. You may want to look into Cacti if you only need to graph, or another NMS package (I prefer ZenOSS, but there are a number of other open ones out there) if you want graphing, alerting, and trap collection, etc. -Scott -----Original Message----- From: voiceops-bounces at voiceops.org [mailto:voiceops-bounces at voiceops.org] On Behalf Of Alex Balashov Sent: Monday, November 22, 2010 2:28 PM To: Ujjval Karihaloo Cc: voiceops at voiceops.org Subject: Re: [VoiceOps] Broadsoft/ACME and Solarwinds Solarwinds in general is horrid and abysmal for third-party MIB importation. I have been doing this with their IPmon product with Acme, Metaswitch and Sylantro, for years (IPmon was acquired by solar winds). Works just fine, though you do need to send the vendor MIB file to their support dept to have a new database compiled, I've found it a generally painless process.
