Say a subscriber ports a number to/from a different telco. Then, after some time, the subscriber decides they no longer want the phone number (or phone service in general). What should be done with this abandoned number? Should the number immediately be returned to the donor telco? Should the number be returned to the donor telco after aging? Is it permissible for the recipient telco to add this number to their inventory and then re-assign the number to a different subscriber?

Common practice is to age them out and then push them back to the original block holder. Depends on who/what you use for NPAC access, or if you use like LTI..etc. We built our own SOA and LSMS XML platform so we didn't have to go through a third-party like Neustar or 10x..etc. We get a notification (via our normal XML mechanized interface) when a TN is disconnected in the NPAC back to us for any of our SPID's. Likewise there is a SOA action you can call to disconnect/remove an SV for a given TN. Not everyone does it. But most of the iLEC's ..etc do honor it and disconnect TN's back regularly. If you use LTI, I'm not sure how it's presented there. ________________________________ From: VoiceOps <voiceops-bounces at voiceops.org> on behalf of Mike Hammett via VoiceOps <voiceops at voiceops.org> Sent: Friday, October 14, 2022 11:19 AM To: Jeff Shultz <jeffshultz at sctcweb.com> Cc: voiceops at voiceops.org <voiceops at voiceops.org> Subject: Re: [VoiceOps] Abandoned Ported Numbers How would the original carrier know? NPAC Helpdesk has a form called MUMP that you can use to return TNs or thousand blocks. You log into the NPAC Helpdesk to download a copy of the form and then submit it via a service order. If you need help doing it I can walk you through it. MARY LOU CAREY BackUP Telecom Consulting Office: 615-791-9969 Cell: 615-796-1111 On 2022-10-14 02:41 PM, Nick Olsen via VoiceOps wrote:

How would the original carrier know? I've never seen anything about numbers being returned to us. Maybe my employees are ignoring them, maybe the emails are lost, maybe we have to fetch it from somewhere.

I know the LNP coordinator in our company occasionally sends out "NPAC Disconnects" spreadsheets of numbers that have been returned to us, so presumably this is an NPAC process.

It's been a long time since I've used NPAC personally but there is a cancel button if I recall correctly and it pushes the number back to the original pooling carrier.

You don't often get email from voiceops at ics-il.net. Learn why this is important [3]
How does that work?

Common practice is to age them out and then push them back to the original block holder.

_______________________________________________ VoiceOps mailing list VoiceOps at voiceops.org

Can anybody reference any regulations that would /require/ such numbers be returned?? Something from say, the FCC's website? I'm looking to provide for something more than just, "common practice". I appreciate everybody's help!

NXX Guidelines can be found at https://nationalpooling.com/ Then click on the documents link. Its most likely in the FCC NRO (Numbering Resource Optimization) orders.
