anyone have service with XO in their e-sip side? they seem to have a great deal but just saw a two month deal fall over because they "suddenly" don't support open-source or asterisk anymore but do switchvox... this is after a deposit too. thanks, JD

What does "support" mean? Example: level3 and Verizon don't provide support for BroadSoft BroadWorks or Metaswitch or Acme Packet or Genband or anybody else, though thousands of service providers and enterprises using those platforms use both level3 and Verizon. (They just support SIP.) Do you need their support for a given product?

I would guess JD means that Asterisk and other open-source UAs have been dropped from their list of Approved(TM)/Interop-Certified(R) equipment. -- Alex Balashov - Principal Evariste Systems LLC Tel: +1-678-954-0670 Web: http://www.evaristesys.com/, http://www.alexbalashov.com/ Please be kind to the English language: http://www.entrepreneur.com/article/232906

I think this is going to become more and more common service providers are getting sick and tired of trying to support people bringing in their PBX phone system and because it's not following the RFC or the service provider isn't following the RFC closely enough weird stuff starts to happen. Calls start failing and both parties point the finger at the other party and no one wins. I understand however if they're approving switchvox and claim that it's proprietary vs asterisk. Switchvox, based on Asterisk, is a full-featured, unified communications (UC) business phone system, and is designed for small-to-midsized businesses. The Switchvox appliances are 60-80% less expensive than competitive UC systems based on proprietary technologies. Is Switchvox right for you? Where Asterisk is an engine, Switchvox is a complete vehicle that anyone with minimal computer experience can manage and is built for small and mid-sized businesses that need a powerful, cost effective phone system. seems to me like Switchvox is just a GUI and it runs asterisk. Pretty much. But try telling an Enterprise(TM) telco that and see if they care. :-) -- Alex Balashov - Principal Evariste Systems LLC Tel: +1-678-954-0670 Web: http://www.evaristesys.com/, http://www.alexbalashov.com/ Please be kind to the English language: http://www.entrepreneur.com/article/232906

It could just be a flat out paid support issue. When you buy a product from switchvox / metaswitch / genband there is inherited (paid) support, that can work through issues. Where as asterisk as an open source vehicle does not come with that. Yes there are plenty of people can can support the open source version, but your typical office admin is not going to be able to do so. Just my 2 cents. They were effectively DOSed by someone's crappy dialplan, so now they're scared. There's less foot-shooting room in Switchvox, that's for sure. Just change your sip useragent and tell them you're using switchvox (or put all your asterisk infra behind a "supportable" SBC if you're really worried about compliance). ______________________________________________________________________ The information contained in and transmitted with this communication is strictly confidential, is intended only for use of the intended recipient, and is the property of Franklin American Mortgage Company.
