Is there any reason I can't throw all 8YY traffic at my IXC tandem? In looking in my Metaswitch config, it appears that only 8YY traffic destined for my LATA (which doesn't really make any sense) goes to the tandem. Everything else goes out to a domestic termination provider. ----- Mike Hammett Intelligent Computing Solutions http://www.ics-il.com Midwest Internet Exchange http://www.midwest-ix.com

How does your switch know that the 8YY in question is destined for your LATA? I mean, you have to provide a valid path in the LATA for the CICs that might come back based on your source TN, like if you're calling from NPA 248, you should have that sent somewhere in LATA 340 in case the SMS/800 has a specific cutout for various LATAs to use certain CICs (for example, I use Inteliquent's FGD code in areas where Inteliquent has built it out, but not in other LATAs where Inteliquent hasn't built out, so dipping LATA 340 (Detroit) and then terminating the call to a local tandem in rural idaho isn't going to work well!) That's the only caveat I'm aware of you need to concern yourself with - that the CICs returned from your toll free dip are going to be valid for the tandem you are connected to, more or less.

*shrugs* I didn't build it. That's also why I said it didn't make any sense. To me, no traffic would match being 8YY *AND* to this ratecenter, at least from my perspective. Therefore, that rule would never apply. That said, toll-free dipping is a new concept to me that I'll have to read up about. ----- Mike Hammett Intelligent Computing Solutions http://www.ics-il.com Midwest Internet Exchange http://www.midwest-ix.com ----- Original Message ----- From: "Paul Timmins" <paul at timmins.net> To: voiceops at voiceops.org Sent: Thursday, July 1, 2021 11:10:14 AM Subject: Re: [VoiceOps] 8YY Traffic On 7/1/21 11:20 AM, Mike Hammett wrote: Is there any reason I can't throw all 8YY traffic at my IXC tandem? You should be able to route 8YY traffic over both but only IntraLATA 8YY traffic over the Local IntraLATA trunk group. MARY LOU CAREY BackUP Telecom Consulting Office: 615-791-9969 Cell: 615-796-1111 On 2021-07-01 10:20 AM, Mike Hammett wrote:

How would you go about determining if a toll free number is intralata or not? ________________________________ From: VoiceOps <voiceops-bounces at voiceops.org> on behalf of Mary Lou Carey <marylou at backuptelecom.com> Sent: Thursday, July 1, 2021 5:31 PM To: Mike Hammett Cc: voiceops Subject: Re: [VoiceOps] 8YY Traffic You should be able to route 8YY traffic over both but only IntraLATA 8YY traffic over the Local IntraLATA trunk group. I was just commenting on what the trunks would accept......not whether its cost or time effective to save the 8YY dips so you point it to a cheaper route. MARY LOU CAREY BackUP Telecom Consulting Office: 615-791-9969 Cell: 615-796-1111 On 2021-07-01 04:44 PM, Paul Timmins wrote:

I did mean for my outbound 8YY calls. It was my understanding that I didn't have a cost for that traffic, just that I was forfeiting some amount of revenue. ----- Mike Hammett Intelligent Computing Solutions http://www.ics-il.com Midwest Internet Exchange http://www.midwest-ix.com ----- Original Message ----- From: "Mary Lou Carey" <marylou at backuptelecom.com> To: "Paul Timmins" <ptimmins at clearrate.com> Cc: "Mike Hammett" <voiceops at ics-il.net>, "voiceops" <voiceops at voiceops.org> Sent: Friday, July 2, 2021 12:45:24 PM Subject: Re: [VoiceOps] 8YY Traffic I was just commenting on what the trunks would accept......not whether its cost or time effective to save the 8YY dips so you point it to a cheaper route. If you dump it on a local tandem untranslated, you're being billed the dip cost and you're entitled to capture that as well as whatever your tariffed rates for the traffic are. (some carriers will bill the dip directly to the terminating ixc if you send them the traffic, so make sure you check so you're not double dipping) If you dip it yourself, and send it to a tandem to terminate on the IXC, then you can bill both elements as well. It's not a lot these days, but it's something.
