Hi all, I am looking for some resources to help me understand how to interact with the PSTN more directly. I have worked for companies which offered VoIP service, but we've always used other carriers upstream (e.g. Bandwidth, Flowroute, etc.). I've found a few references to the regulatory process (e.g. https://transnexus.com/whitepapers/how-to-get-an-lrn/). What I'm looking for is a technical description of the equipment required and how it works. Does anyone know of any good references for this kind of information? Thanks, Ross

Fred Goldstein with Interisle Consulting is a Network Engineer that is like the walking "Encyclopedia of Telecom"! I've brought him in on numerous jobs when my needed help with picking equipment or the best method for operations and he's always been helpful. Fred's e-mail is fred at interisle.net and his phone number is (617) 795-2701. +1 Yeah, Fred Goldstein really knows everything and anything about absolutely everything. I learned an enormous amount from him back on the isp-clec list back in the day, merely as a passive observer, which is where I also came to know of Mary Lou. :-) On Tue, Feb 25, 2020 at 04:36:56PM -0600, Mary Lou Carey wrote:

That's where I first saw the both of them as well. I've met Fred several times (he's now the technical consultant for an organization I'm in). I've had a few debates with him as well over the years. Ross, Learning is always good. I inherited a system that has a bunch of TDM connectivity. I won't give up my local TDM connectivity... local tandems, SIGTRAN, etc. However, I'm not intending to add to it. I'm going to work with Peerless, Inteliquent, etc. for the expansion of my network in that way. ----- Mike Hammett Intelligent Computing Solutions http://www.ics-il.com Midwest Internet Exchange http://www.midwest-ix.com ----- Original Message ----- From: "Alex Balashov" <abalashov at evaristesys.com> To: voiceops at voiceops.org Sent: Tuesday, February 25, 2020 4:42:12 PM Subject: Re: [VoiceOps] PSTN Info +1 Yeah, Fred Goldstein really knows everything and anything about absolutely everything. I came along a bit after UNE-P was dismembered, more mid-late 2000s, but it was a time when a thorough understanding of the arcana of ICAs, CO colos, UNE cross-connects and hand-offs, and SS7 were still what the kids call ?trending?. I would agree that Fred?s output on these topics was voluminous, encyclopaedic, and comprehensive. ? Sent from mobile, with due apologies for brevity and errors.

Thanks everyone for the referral! Unfortunately, my interest is academic rather than commercial, so I was hoping for a written resource since I don't have a budget to hire a consultant. My background is in the MSP/ISP space. I have a lot of familiarity with computer networks and SIP, but the PSTN has always been a black box for me. So I am just trying to understand it better. The Newton's Telecom Dictionary and The Essential Guide to Telecommunications books might have what you're after. On Wed, Feb 26, 2020 at 10:01 AM Ross Tajvar <ross at tajvar.io> wrote:
