VoIP over 3G/4G Data Connection

What are the recommended settings to successfully implement VoIP over 3G/4G data connection? Assume we are talking about using Polycom phones, and the 3G/4G data connection comes from a Cradlepoint router that is plugged in with AC power and has high gain antennas. The device will be stationary, so we will not have to worry about tower handoffs breaking the connection. This will be for fixed wireless aiming at a cell tower. I assume packet loss will be a big concern as we have no control or QoS abilities. Plus, the speed fluctuates so much. I have read to use G.729 codec, and TCP for signaling to bypass firewalls. Besides that, what other settings are recommended? Changes in MTU? Changes in voice payload ms? Is there a better codec to use? Header compression?

I just spent time researching this last week for California where we are based and my conclusion was that as a "public utility engaged in the business of providing communications services and facilities" we have an exemption from the call recording laws at least for the purpose of running a communications network. We do have a California CLEC, and although I consider our voice "Interconnected VoIP", I think intent of the law is pretty clear that telephone service providers are exempt for the purposes of maintaining their network. The full California law is here: http://www.leginfo.ca.gov/cgi-bin/displaycode?section=pen&group=00001-01000… Here is the exemption language: (b) This section shall not apply (1) to any public utility engaged in the business of providing communications services and facilities, or to the officers, employees or agents thereof, where the acts otherwise prohibited herein are for the purpose of construction, maintenance, conduct or operation of the services and facilities of the public utility, or (2) to the use of any instrument, equipment, facility, or service furnished and used pursuant to the tariffs of a public utility, or (3) to any telephonic communication system used for communication exclusively within a state, county, city and county, or city correctional facility. -- Dave Clark President Impulse Advanced Communications 805-456-5800 x6339

Comcast Voice Engineer?

Is there per chance a Comcast Voice Engineer out there? Comcast customers, at least in the Augusta GA neck-of-the-woods, are unable to call an 803-202 number. When they call it, it rings, and rings, and rings. When called from off of Comcast network, it completes fine. Customer advises that they were going to port to Comcast, but they couldn't get it done as quickly as the customer wanted. Seems like maybe Comcast has a translation built for the TN, that they never actually ported in. Any assistance would be appreciated. customer is understandably unhappy, and there's little I can do as we're not a Comcast peer or customer. Off-list input welcomed!
