I still am not completely up to speed on the NG911 stuff admittedly, so take with grain of salt, but... My understanding has always been that E911 database cruft is not a big deal because each E911 aggregator essentially runs their own database, and the lookups are done at the time of the 911 call & the source of the call is taken into account (however the carrier is trunked to the E911 SP; e.g., the particular SIP peer if trunking between carrier and E911 provider is done via IP), so even if two carriers use the same E911 aggregator and have conflicting entries for the same TN in their database, the correct address will still get sent to the PSAP, because the query that's executed isn't only "where TN = xxx" but is the equivalent of "where From: VoiceOps [mailto:voiceops-bounces at voiceops.org] On Behalf Of Mike Hammett via VoiceOps Sent: Tuesday, October 18, 2022 3:22 PM To: voiceops at voiceops.org Subject: [VoiceOps] 911 Database Stuff Going through a migration from E911 to NG911, I've been peering into what and how we do 911, both old and new. B) We have more entries than we have TNs. C) People are bad at documentation. I'm assuming we should be deleting records for customers that disconnected service. I'm not sure we've done that, based on the records that I see. For customers that port away, I'm assuming we're supposed to be unlocking the TN for the new provider to take over the record. If I unlock it, but the new provider never migrates away, what do I do with it? Help Navigating AT&T call trees that go nowhere

I have an issue with a local AT&T tandem rejecting calls for AT&T some subscribers (entire NXX from what we can see). We've tried to call pretty much every number we have and gotten nowhere. Either the person can't help and transfers us to a place that can't help, or they give us a new 800 number to call. In one instance the new 800 number was a medical facility, not AT&T. Does anyone have a way to actually reach someone? One of the numbers we got is from an actual AT&T technician, and even he couldn't get through to someone to look at the issue. Thanks Shawn

Abandoned Ported Numbers

Say a subscriber ports a number to/from a different telco. Then, after some time, the subscriber decides they no longer want the phone number (or phone service in general). What should be done with this abandoned number? Should the number immediately be returned to the donor telco? Should the number be returned to the donor telco after aging? Is it permissible for the recipient telco to add this number to their inventory and then re-assign the number to a different subscriber?

Lack of Sandbox

How common is it for an upstream provider (in this case someone that manages 911 networks) to not have a sandbox, testing number, or anything of any kind to allow you to test that you've done everything right, short of just sending 911 calls in production? Most of my third-party DID providers have various (well, usually 933) numbers to test that you're routing correctly, are getting the right information returned, etc. One (the one on the LEC side of the house) has no mechanism for such. To quote Bill O'Reilly, "We'll do it live!". Tandem Dropping Calls

We have a new customer that has an increasing number of TNs they can't call. I've traced them all down to going through our local Frontier tandem. Calls from other phone numbers on our network are fine. Two of the numbers are with Frontier, just another ratecenter off of that tandem. The third we know of goes to VZW. I submit a ticket to Frontier with source number, destination number, and call date\time for the last set of problem calls, all within the previous 24 hours, out of our Metaswitch SAS. Frontier replies: Per Software Engineering/DBA: Did not find mention call in IRIS (SS7), did find at that time a call to 815-824-XXXX, not 815-824-YYYY. SS7 show that call at 14:51 came in on DNC tgn 1011, GN089085, OPC=005-092-136 and terminate to DeKalb switch. Verified incoming call in switch, switch not blocking terminating to line. **31 - Normal. Unspecified. This cause is used to report a normal event only when no other cause in the normal class applies**. Found no trouble in switch translations/routing. Status: Cleared Awaiting Cust Verification So we have a very different definition of "cleared". I call a problem cleared when it's resolved, not when the reason can't be found. So Frontier: 1. Can't find one of the three calls I sent them. 2. Doesn't chase the problem to the end of the line. 3. Clarifies that the ISUP error I'm getting means they don't have a reason for it to be closed, so probably not a normal circumstance. 4. Doesn't investigate why there's an unclassified release. Number -> Tandem Lookup

Say I have a phone number (or an LRN). How do I find out what tandem switch it's actually homed to? I know that the phone number (or LRN) should be homed to whatever tandem switch the ILEC in that rate center is homed to, but A) that doesn't always happen and B) you can't always easily (telcodata.us) determine what tandem the ILEC is using. I know I can look SHAs up in the LERG, but I don't have that access. Is anyone on here with good connections with Higher Education (Colleges, Universities, Professional Schools)? I'm doing a presentation at EDUCAUSE, the Higher-Ed IT Conference, on the changing uses of Voice communications in that space. I'd love to chat briefly to see how folks are using the phone system at High-Ed institutions and how they see that changing. -- Are campus users using the phone systems differently now than they did a few years ago? -- Does every new staff or faculty member want a phone number? -- Who are the heaviest users of the voice system? -- Have you recently removed any parts of the phone system? What attestation for verified calls?

Has the industry as a whole more or less settled on a particular attestation level when marking a call as verified in the CNAM? If my phone receives a call and it says verified does that mean the call was at attestation 'A' only, or 'A' and 'B', any level of passing attestation, etc.? Thanks
