Sorry, press sent too early I read an article on this on TMCnet.com and also one below: http://www.dwt.com/LearningCenter/Advisories?find=389440 I am seeing some of our termination carriers revise their rates and looks like the big guns (AT&T, VZ etc) will be charging them more than before as a result of the new proposed regulations. Thoughts, worries ?

I believe I know the answer to this question already, but would we be able to provide for terminations from other phone companies into our local lata with out end office trunks (we just have trunks to the LEC's Local and Access tandems)? IE. Company A. in LATA A wants to terminate calls to LATA B through us. I know we could technically do it, but this is more of a legal question. Thanks, -Eric

Howdy, In case you hadn't seen it, there's going to be a SIPNOC conference coming up in April in Washington, DC. It's basically a NANOG-type meeting for SIP folks - a meeting for engineers, not executives. We're looking for SIP network operators (service providers, enterprises, etc.) to present on topics they think other operators may find of interest. For example: SIP Trunking or Peering - topics may include best practices, issues, agreement models, and routing methods for SIP enterprise trunks, or peering between service providers or between enterprises Applications/content - topics may include new or novel media, new user service features, new uses of SIP, storage/recording, or topics about IM, presence, fax, video or telepresence Interoperability - topics may include best practices, issues found, current state of deployed equipment, or tactics for resolving interop issues Routing - topics may include new or novel mechanisms, best practices, or issues with routing of SIP sessions/requests/calls Security - topics may include experience with or tactics/best-practices for handling fraud, DDoS, overload events, AAA, blacklists, SPIT or war-dialers Monitoring/Troubleshoooting - topics may include experiences or mechanisms for monitoring remote or large SIP networks, measuring or monitoring call quality, or how to reproduce and resolve issues Testing - topics may include techniques for equipment certification, procedures for testing new trunks/peers, useful tools or scripts Availability/Disaster-Recovery - topics may include techniques, architectures or procedures for handling equipment failures, site/PoP failures, Internet or network transport outages, or power outages The above are just example topics. In general, presentations are being sought by and for SIP network operators of all sizes. Presentations about difficult problems (and interesting solutions) that you encounter in the course of your job are encouraged. Dumping and sorting out SIP sessions

Hello, I found a very interesting utility, pcapsipdump https://sourceforge.net/projects/pcapsipdump/ allowing to dump and save on the disk as many .pcap file as many SIP sessions are created in the day. This tool is invaluable to sort out problems with client complaints. Even if the problem has happened few hours ago, you can read all the SIP packets flow and even listen to the audio stream (never tried, but I think wireshark can read such pcap and play you the audio part). The problem is this tool is not working on some of my servers (especially 64bit one). So, is there an alternative? If you do it, what do you use for dumping the SIP sessions? Thank you Leandro

h.323 breech and toll fraud case

A company we work closely with, but is not our customer, had their Cisco Call Manager hacked due to some h.323 vulnerability that I don't have full details on yet. There were a number of calls placed to: 881835211540 881835211556 881835211547 My findings indicate these are Globalstar satellite numbers that cost somewhere between $4 and $7/minute to call, depending on carrier. The victim's carrier is billing them at $6.50. The total bill for the event is around $13k. This is a small company that can't really afford this. I am not an interested party in the sense that it wasn't on our network, but it's a company we work with a lot and want to help. I also want to learn from this to potentially protect our own network. Some questions... 1. What is the scam here? The recipient of those calls doesn't gain anything, and placing a few calls to three specific satellite phones seems to have little purpose. Many of the calls were concurrent. It all happened in the span of just a few hours. 2. Anyone experienced the same thing with those numbers or similar numbers? 3. About a year ago I attended an FBI presentation on VoIP fraud and there was a VoIP specialist who gave his contact info, but I can't find it. Level 3 issues Tennesse?

We had some customer complains in the east coast & all our gear tested clean. Calling into Level 3 we were told about a fiber cut in Nashville but now there is no acknowledgement from Level 3. Anyone saw call failures, lomg pdds one way audio issues. Issues started about 315 pm mst & went away about 4 pm mst by itself. Ujjval Karihaloo

Does anyone here use DIDX or some other similar service to sell DIDs? We are considering this to make a bit of money, not expecting to get rich, but seems to be a useful revenue stream? Any advice or pitfalls concerning this plan? Thanks! -Eric
