I don't know how many times I've had to talk to sales rep for 4+ weeks just to get a rough idea at what we *MIGHT* spend. In all honesty, it is usually worth it as they are usually able to take your requirements (A) your budget (B) and somehow find a product in their lineup that combines the two into (C). Then again, since you are new to the hardware; talking to them might be beneficial to you as you'll quickly learn what you do and do not need. Some times a sales pitch isn't such a bad thing. I've been asked to start researching our next soft switch that will replace an asterisk based VoIP platform. Currently were reselling service in other markets that are outside of our home market. So I am starting my research on Meta, Sonus, Broadsoft, and some competing platforms. What I can't find is what is the price range on anything without talking to sales and even at that it's usually a long drawn out process at least that's my experience with other gear. I would really like to find out the price range on some of these switches. I am not looking for specific pricing just kind of a ball park. Right now I am still in the idea stage. We just started the process of negotiating interconnection agreements so I don't expect us to get real serious on a switch selection until early 2010. In the meantime I want to learn as much as I can about possible gear but I don't want to spend time on something I don't think will be close to the budget. Richey

If you are looking for a T1/Ethernet Cisco 2431-8FXS / 2431-16FXS. On the grey / bay market they are about 500 to 700 depending on which way the wind blows. I have used the Adtran 900 series routers and had a really bad experience with some Mitel SX200s but I have one running with an Intertel that would not work with a Cisco over at T1 port. Linksys has one as well but it?s Ethernet only. I can?t remember the model but it is an 8 port we are using at a very picky customer?s office. Not a word out of him since we turned the box up a month ago. Acme: EMS or CLI?

So for all the Acme users out there, is the huge cost for the EMS worth it to you? How many people use CLI vs EMS for their day to day actions? Some things lend more towards CLI (linux, cisco, asterisk) and some things just lend more towards GUI (Metaswitch, Broadsoft, Sonus Insight). -Scott

Question for NexTone SBC Users

We've been using NexTone's MSX session boarder controller product for the past several years. While our experience with support and maintenance on this product was not great under NexTone, our experience with Genband -- the latest owner of the NexTone product line -- leaves quite a bit more to be desired. Is anyone on the list using someone other than Genband for support on a NexTone SBC? If so, whom and how has your experience been? Thanks, Mike

G729 across ATM

Hi I'm trying to ensure optimal bandwidth usage for our VoIP solution. The last mile link to the customer is ATM. I have done some calculations, and unless I'm missing something here it seems 1 voice packet will always be split across two ATM cells. I'm not finding a good doc that can break this down into detail. Voice usage per packet: Codec: G729a, using 20ms sample size, 20 byte payload = 20 bytes. Layer3: IP/RTP/UDP header = 40 bytes Bandwidth required = at least 60 byte packet. ATM Cell: 53 bytes - 5 overhead - 8 AAL trailer Bandwidth available = at most 40 bytes. My first question is: How does the Cisco voice bandwidth calculator fit G729 on 10ms or 20ms or 30ms payload into 1 Cell? Do they assume cRTP is enabled? Then, I'm not finding a good doc on how to effectively calculate bandwidth usage for cRTP across ATM. Configuring it via a virtual-template interface seems straight forward though. Lastly, if I manage to get a G729 packet squeezed into 1 cell, apart from the obvious save in bandwidth consumption, should there be any other improvement in the solution as a whole?
