I'm looking into the options that currently exist as far as a cost-effective FXS-laden voice gateway product goes. We have used Adtran, and they're (mostly) great, but ideally, if we could slash the cost of that gear down, that would be brilliant. We can deploy an embedded system running Asterisk (MikroTik RouterBoard or Raspberry Pi) + a bunch of dual-port ATAs for a fraction of the cost; the problem is that a stack of ATAs is physically unsightly in a telecom room, and it makes for a bit of a management mess. If there were an external, stackable, cost-effective DAHDI-compatible interface, that would be ideal. The Xorcom USB Astribanks look *awesome*, but unfortunately, they are more expensive than IP0X hardware, and bordering on Adtran pricing. There are always options like Grandstream and Linksys/Cisco, but I worry about 1) reliability and 2) lack of flexibility. I am (still) very interested in David Rowe's "open hardware" initiatives, such as the IP04 & its cousins, but the Atcom-manufactured units are hard to come by in the States. (Sure, we can order from China, but what a costly [time-wise] pain.) Also, they don't come in > 8 FXS port boxes, and so far it doesn't look like you are going to get better pricing than ~$500/8FXS anyway regardless. But...surely there are other manufacturers out there either that are using the IP04 design essentially unmodified, or close enough. However, I can't find a comprehensive list anywhere. As far as North America goes, I have run into Nicherons/SpoTel in Canada, which I'm pretty sure is IP0X-based, but outside of the SwitchFin/SwitchVoice dudes (Bulgaria), that's about it for IP0X hardware, and that surprises me. I have looked into Yeastar recently, and they have piqued my interest, especially since their NeoGate hardware is both apparently based on Asterisk and is priced to sell. But it sounds like their firmware is based on ancient code (Asterisk 1.6.2.x) and it is unclear to me how easily modifiable it is. If it were IP0X based, I could just roll my own firmware and not care about what came preloaded. But from all reports, they have a TI ARM-based SoC in their boxes, not Blackfin. Anybody have any experience with their stuff? Perhaps more importantly, any leads on third-party firmwares for Yeastar boxes? Thanks, -- Nathan Anderson First Step Internet, LLC nathana at fsr.com

Vitleity alternatives

Hello, We have been using Vitelity in the last two years, a few months after they were acquired by Onvoy. In the last months we see a deterioration in the quality of their service. Port requests we submit take weeks to complete, when we ask for an update they try to sell us the expedited service for $75!! It also seems that they have a big problem with staff as we see a big turnover with the people we deal with. Their portal may have been the state of the art years ago, now it feels like it is from the middle ages. Looks like Onvoy is busy spending money on acquisitions, but would not let them provide good customer service. Would be happy to hear if you can recommend any alternatives. Thanks!

what is a fair port out fee?

Im trying to negotiate a new orig carrier onboard and they have a 10 dollar port out fee. This would be a pretty staggering figure if I had to port out my TN's due to quality or similar issues. I'm not naming names, thats not cool but at the same time before I sign anything it looks like I'm seeing a lot of 1 - 3 dollar port out fees on websites I really want to get this number pushed down but don't want to be unreasonable, I just can't sign something where a port out fee is that high. Whats the norm out there?

Hunt Group "as a Service"

Hi all, Not sure if this has been discussed here before, I couldn't find any relevant archives. I am looking for an Out-of-Band hunt group solution as a service, and by that I mean a single DID to be used by a hunt group instead of an extension, and the hunt group must be able to call external DIDs, not extensions only. Someone would call whatever DID is assigned, and the PBX would go down a list of numbers to call until someone picks up. My use case is to provide an on-call support line that does not rely on our internal infrastructure or existing phone system. I looked into some of the larger providers like 8x8, self-hosted 3CX, etc... Vonage has this option, but I don't need the whole thing, just this one feature. Any help would be appreciated, thanks! Broadworks AS and XSP API questions

Hello all, For those of you who develop against the Broadworks AS and XSP APIs, how do you do testing? We know of the online sandbox instances, but they seem too limited to us, and do include many of the features that we need. Have you licensed a lab instance of Broadworks? If so, how did you go about this? Our reseller doesn't seem to understand the question. Or is there some lab instance or temporary/limited license program that we are unaware of? The same question applies to training systems: we would like to be able to train operators on non-live systems, let them learn to screw it up and fix it, but so far the price seems prohitive to doing this.
