Hey all, i have a question that i could use some help on. I have a customer that wants to replace a PBX that is shared between administration and residences in a campus environment with a VoIP solution. PBX currently has a digital phone in each residence connected via CAT3/rj11 back to a RJ21x the MDF. There are 238 units. customer would like to provide POTs service to each residence with some class 5 features, VM, CLID, 3WAY, etc. There is not Cat5/rj45 connections in any of the units. I was thinking of bringing in several Adit600 chassis, with 5x8port FXS cards in each, which would give me 40 FXS ports/chassis. meaning 6 chassis. i would likely use MGCP, b/c it works well with the Adit. I can't seem to find a better/larger device that does more than 40 FXS ports, besides a PBX. does anyone know of a product/channel bank that can handle more? i can do SIP or MGCP. oh, i know that i can get a CAT 6500 and populate it with a couple CMMs and populate the CMMs with 24 port FXS cards (WS-SVC-CMM-24FXS), but the client can't maintain it. I am not familiar with many of the configuration details we use but we use an Adtran to do vdsl, adsl, analog lines, etc. We are using a TA5000 with cards in it to handle this. I'm also not sure of the price range you are looking for and if this setup would be out of the range for one customer. It worked great for years, this summer I updated the firmware, switch to SIP and moved the customer onto our Broadworks platform. Still working great. The MALC is a bit of a nightmare to configure but it is great. The MALC I have running has 4 - 48 port POTS cards with a bunch of empty slots. We installed it in a weather proof cabinet including batteries & fusing. This came from Zhone already assembled and wired. Everything is in the basement of one of their campus buildings right next to where the old PBX was. To cut over we wired up new Krone blocks for the MALC. Ran cross connects from Phone -> MALC block and double punched MALC block -> PBX block. Left the MALC disconnected on the 25 pair. When it was time for the cut we just yanked off all the double punch xconnects to disconnect the PBX and plugged in the MALC 25 pair. The total outage was a couple minutes to cut 150+ extensions over. I also use Zhone MALC XP 150A with ADSL2+/POTS running MGCP to my M6. The ADSL2+ is great to push bandwidth out to dorm rooms if they don't have Cat5 anywhere. You can get DSL modems that are embedded in a single gang faceplate to mount in the dorm rooms. Students would see a Cat5 Ethernet jack with 24/2 mb ADSL2+ on the upstream The MALC supports P-phones but no other digital phones. http://www.zhone.com/products/MALC/ http://www.zhone.com/products/opx/ (cabinets) For digital phones you can use a Citel Portico TVA-D. This will convert digital handsets to SIP. I'm not sure about MGCP. Verizon Wireless problem?

That sounds about right. Any idea what the issue may be? From what we can gather it seems it may be a LNP issue. Calling non-ported (unported?) numbers seems to go through, but this may be circumstantial. Verizon SIP DTMF issues in Orlando Florida

Things were quiet... We are experiencing DTMF problems with Verizon Wholesale for DIDs in Orlando, Florida. This started last night. Our other VZ DIDs work fine.The problem doesn't exist when called from Sprint or Verizon cell phones, but do when called via our provider trunks and Verizon landlines. Is anyone else seeing something similar? Thanks! Jared

Broadsoft Device Management vs. Enhanced IP Config

The shop I came from used Enhanced IP Config for endpoint provisioning so I am used to just setting a DHCP option and being done with it. The install I am just completing at my current employer makes use of Device Management and from what I am seeing you have to configure each phone to pull from the appropriate phone model folder which would require touching every phone? I assume there is a way to automate this process? Perhaps I am just being stupid and overlooking the obvious? I am digging through the Polycom configs now to see if you can do something like on the SPA phones i.e. macro substitution. Anyone tackled this?

Local calling areas & 7-digit dialing (NANP)

So we have 7-digit dialing in place for NANP destinations. The implementation is really stupid-simple: if 7 digits are dialed, take the originating number's area code and tack it on to the front of the dialed number. I am pretty sure this is how most commercial ITSPs do it (as tested also on Vonage and Packet8). But for certain areas, this doesn't properly mimic the 7-digit dialing that people who still have a POTS circuit from their LEC are used to. Take ours for example: I'm in Moscow, ID (NPA 208). We sit smack-dab on the WA/ID state border. 8 miles to the west of us is Pullman, WA (NPA 509). Both cities have the same ILEC: Frontier (f/k/a Verizon f/k/a GTE). There has been an understanding here since (I think) the mid-80s that calls between Moscow and Pullman are and will remain local. But on top of that, if you dial a Pullman NXX from Moscow or a Moscow NXX from Pullman as 7-digits, the call is patched through even though the NPA is different and even though (in some cases) both NPAs have NXXes that overlap with each other (although the corresponding NXX in the same NPA as the caller would be considered a long-distance call in all cases I can think of). The ILEC phone switch still does the "right" thing. It's been this way for YEARS, and people here are used to it. Now say I wanted to implement something like that for our customers. I know what the special exceptions are for this local market, and could probably make it work on our switch. But I only know about them because I've lived here and know the drill as a result. And I don't know how common or not this kind of thing is in other areas where you might be on the geographical edge of one's NPA(s). So the question I have is, is there some kind of central resource/authority that I can go to in order to find out what the dialing rules are for a given rate center (mandatory 10-digits/7-digits only within your own NPA/7-digits for certain local NPA-NXX outside your own NPA)? ...or is the only way to know for sure to find out from the locals? -- Nathan
