I have been working to deploy a new private WAN for a customer that services E911 emergency calls delivered over VoIP. While working on this, I learned that their DSCP markings for SIP control traffic are AF12, not AF31 or CS3 which is what I typically see from our other enterprise customers. Media is still marked EF. These markings appear to have been standardized by a body called NENA, National Emergency Number Association. Googling 'NENA SIP "AF12"' returns the relevant PDFs. Below is a sample from their standards guide. DSCP | Use | PHB -----+----------------------------------+-------- 0 | Routine Traffic | Default 1 | 9-1-1 Signaling | AF12 2 | 9-1-1 Text Media | AF12 3 | 9-1-1 Audio Media | EF 4 | 9-1-1 Video Media | AF11 5 | 9-1-1 Non-human-initiated Call | AF21 6 | Intra ESInet* Events | AF21 7 | Intra ESInet Other 9-1-1 Traffic | AF22 (* Emergency Services IP Network) Does anyone know the reasoning behind specifying SIP as AF12 instead of AF31? While developing these standards, was NENA aware that AF12 tends to be prioritized lower than AF31 on most networks? Just trying to get some background on the decision. Thanks, -Brian

Hi all, I am looking for some resources to help me understand how to interact with the PSTN more directly. I have worked for companies which offered VoIP service, but we've always used other carriers upstream (e.g. Bandwidth, Flowroute, etc.). I've found a few references to the regulatory process (e.g. https://transnexus.com/whitepapers/how-to-get-an-lrn/) What I'm looking for is a technical description of the equipment required and how it works. Does anyone know of any good references for this kind of information? Thanks, Ross

NTP Question

How many NTP servers do you guys run? I just spun up two NTP servers in different locations on this network. Metaswitch just asked me for at least four (preferably five, or even more). Right now, the ones I have are just referencing the US pool. Eventually, they'll reference on-net GPS-backed devices. Is having four VMs running NTP a ridiculous proposition (well, other than resources, which it'll consume very little)? I should be able to work out putting them on four different physical servers at the moment, but I don't know that we'll have four or more physical servers once I get new ones (and consolidate). Bizarre CNAM behavior

We have a customer that is a book publishing house. For the most part when they make outgoing calls the displayed CNAM is correct. However, for some (but apparently not all) calls they make to Verizon and T-Mobile cell phones the CNAM for their main number displays as the title of a book that they first published in 2006. This is one of thousands of book titles that they have published. Obviously they have never had a telephone account associated with this title. If I had to guess, I'd say that some entity is crawling the web for phone numbers, attempting to associate the results with names, and selling this as CNAM data. Trying to get this fixed is going down a rabbit hole. Has anyone else seen something like this and if so were you able to resolve it? Hi, I know US has lots of trade restrictions against Iran , but How legal is it to connect to Iranian voice carrier over SIP? or sell them US termination/origination services? Just wondering , should I connect? is it worth it? Thanks Jay.
